How to prepare for Java placements
11 min readUpdated
Campus and off-campus hiring for Java roles follows a similar pattern: an online test, one or two technical interviews and an HR round. This guide explains what each round checks and gives you a plan to prepare for all of them without panic in the last month.
The usual hiring rounds
| Round | What it checks | How to prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Online assessment | Coding problems, often with a section of technical multiple-choice questions | Timed practice on coding problems; revise core CS |
| Coding round | One to three problems, easy to medium, sometimes live | DSA patterns, clean Java, stating complexity |
| Technical interview | Core Java, OOP, collections, SQL, your projects, a small coding task | Interview question banks, explain your projects |
| Core CS questions | Operating systems, DBMS, computer networks basics | Short revision notes for each subject |
| HR interview | Communication, attitude, fit, expectations | Prepare stories with the STAR method |
A 12-week plan
Already comfortable with core Java? Use this plan as is. If not, spend the first weeks on Java basics, OOP and collections, then start here.
| Weeks | Focus | Every day |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Core Java and OOP revision, complexity basics | 2 easy coding problems |
| 3–4 | Arrays, strings, hashing, two pointers, sliding window | 2–3 problems |
| 5–6 | Recursion, linked lists, stacks, queues, binary search | 2–3 problems |
| 7–8 | Trees, heaps, graphs basics; SQL queries | 2–3 problems, 3 SQL queries |
| 9 | Greedy and dynamic programming basics; OS and DBMS | 2 problems, 1 CS topic |
| 10 | Computer networks; finish and polish your project | 2 problems, project work |
| 11 | Interview question banks; resume; mock interviews | 1 timed mock test |
| 12 | Revision of notes and weak topics; HR preparation | 1 timed mock test |
The technical interview
- Core Java: JDK vs JRE vs JVM, strings and immutability,
==vsequals(), exceptions, staticandfinal. - OOP: the four pillars with examples, overloading vs overriding, abstract class vs interface.
- Collections:
ArrayListvsLinkedList, howHashMapworks,HashSet,ComparablevsComparator. - Java 8: lambdas, streams,
Optional. - SQL: joins,
GROUP BY, second highest salary, keys and normalisation. - Your project: what it does, your part, one design choice and one problem you solved.
- Java interview questions for freshers
- OOP interview questions in Java
- SQL interview questions for Java developers
In the coding round
- Read the problem twice and ask about edge cases (empty input, duplicates, negative numbers, limits).
- Say a brute-force idea and its complexity first, then improve it.
- Write clean code: clear names, small methods, no clever tricks.
- Dry-run your code on a small example before saying you are done.
- State the final time and space complexity.
Resume and profiles
- One page. Education, skills, two or three projects, internships, achievements.
- Projects first if you have no experience: what you built, the tech stack and one measurable result.
- Only skills you can defend. Every line on the resume is a possible interview question.
- GitHub: pinned projects with a clear README, screenshots or a live link, and regular commits.
- LinkedIn: a clear headline, the same projects, and a short summary in plain words.
The HR round
Prepare short, honest answers to the usual questions: tell me about yourself, strengths and weaknesses, why this company, a challenge you faced, where you see yourself, and questions about relocation or shifts. Use the STAR method for stories: Situation, Task, Action, Result.
Common mistakes
- Starting DSA in the final month. It needs months of steady practice.
- Memorising answers without understanding. Interviewers ask follow-up questions.
- Listing technologies you used once in a tutorial.
- No mock interviews. Speaking your answers out loud is a different skill from knowing them.
- Ignoring core CS subjects. OS, DBMS and networks questions are common in technical rounds.
Frequently asked questions
How many months do I need to prepare for placements?
If you already know Java, about three months of steady work is enough for most roles. If you are starting from scratch, plan six months or more, beginning with core Java.
Is Java a good language for placements?
Yes. It is accepted in almost every coding round, widely used in companies hiring freshers, and its collections make DSA problems easier to write.
What should I put in my resume as a fresher?
Two or three projects you built yourself with links, the skills you can explain, education, internships and achievements. Keep it to one page.
Do I need a big project for placements?
One complete, well-explained project beats several half-finished ones. Make sure you can explain every design choice in it.
