Spring Boot roadmap: from Java to backend developer
10 min readUpdated
Spring Boot is the most common way companies build Java backends. It is also easy to get lost in, because it hides so much. This roadmap shows what to learn first, the order of the Spring topics themselves and what to build at each step so it all sticks.
What to know before Spring Boot
Spring makes sense only on top of solid foundations. Without them, annotations feel like magic and errors make no sense.
- Core Java and OOP: classes, interfaces, inheritance versus composition, exceptions.
- Collections and Java 8+: lists, maps, lambdas, streams,
Optional. - SQL: tables, joins,
GROUP BY, keys and indexes. - JDBC basics: connections,
PreparedStatement, transactions. You will understand what JPA does for you. - HTTP and REST: methods, status codes, headers, JSON.
- Maven and Git: build a project, add dependencies, commit and push.
The roadmap
| Step | Learn | Build |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Inversion of control, beans, constructor injection, the project layout | A small app with services wired by Spring |
| 2 | Auto-configuration, starters, application.yml, profiles, logging | The same app with dev and prod profiles |
| 3 | REST controllers, @PathVariable, @RequestParam, @RequestBody, ResponseEntity | A CRUD API for products, in memory |
| 4 | Validation and global error handling (@Valid, @RestControllerAdvice) | Clean 400 and 404 responses |
| 5 | Spring Data JPA: entities, repositories, derived queries, relationships | Move the API to MySQL |
| 6 | Transactions, pagination, the N+1 problem, Flyway migrations | Orders with paging and safe stock updates |
| 7 | Spring Security: password hashing, JWT login, roles, ownership checks | Sign-up, login and protected endpoints |
| 8 | Testing: JUnit, Mockito, @WebMvcTest, @DataJpaTest, Testcontainers | Tests for every layer |
| 9 | OpenAPI docs, Docker, CI, configuration and secrets for production | The API running in Docker with a live URL |
What a well-structured project looks like
Interviewers look at structure as much as features. Keep controllers thin, put business rules in services, data access in repositories, and never return entities straight from the API.

| Project | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Product catalogue API | CRUD, validation, paging and error handling |
| Expense tracker API | JPA relationships, reports with GROUP BY, per-user data |
| URL shortener | Unique key generation, redirects, caching and hit counting |
| Event ticket booking | Transactions and preventing double booking |
| One complete project | JWT security, tests, Docker, CI and a live link in the README |
Common mistakes
- Starting Spring Boot before core Java, SQL and HTTP are comfortable.
- Copying a tutorial project without changing anything. Add your own features so you can explain every line.
- Field injection with
@Autowiredeverywhere. Use constructor injection. - Returning JPA entities from controllers. Use DTOs.
- Using
spring.jpa.hibernate.ddl-auto=updatein production instead of migrations. - Putting passwords and keys in
application.ymlin Git. Use environment variables. - No tests. Even a few controller and service tests make a project stand out.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to learn Spring Boot?
With solid core Java, about two to three months of regular practice to build a secured, tested REST API with a database. Real confidence comes from finishing one or two complete projects.
Do I need to learn Spring before Spring Boot?
No. Learn Spring's core ideas (beans and dependency injection) while learning Spring Boot; the rest of Spring comes as you need it.
Is Hibernate required for Spring Boot?
Most Spring Boot projects use Spring Data JPA, which uses Hibernate underneath. Learn JPA with it, and keep your SQL skills for queries JPA cannot express well.
Which Java version should I use with Spring Boot?
Use a current long-term support version such as Java 17 or 21; recent Spring Boot versions require at least Java 17.
Learn it step by step
- Inversion of control in plain words
- Constructor injection and why to prefer it
- @RestController and @RequestMapping
- What belongs in each layer
- JPA, Hibernate and Spring Data JPA
- Why ddl-auto=update is unsafe
- Login endpoint that returns a token
- Test ShopLite: controllers, validation and errors
- Ship ShopLite 1: Dockerfile and Compose
